More and more people on bikes
Across Europe, there is a growing focus on sustainable transport solutions, including electric cars, public transport, and micro-mobility. Employers also play a crucial role in this development by encouraging employees to use bicycles more often for commuting. In the Netherlands, France and Belgium alike, we see that this approach is proving effective.
A Dutch study by Shuttel, for example, shows that more and more people are choosing cycling as a means of transport to work. This success is partly due to the active promotion of cycling by employers. More and more companies offer higher allowances for cycled kilometres and introduce lease bikes, thus promoting both sustainability and the vitality of their employees.
Bicycle use is also increasing significantly in France and Belgium. This is shown by figures from Provelo and the French Ministry of Transport. In Belgium, one in three employees cycled to work last year, a significant increase compared to the period before Covid. In France, there was an impressive 48% increase in the number of bicycle trips in the same period, which is almost half as much!
Young people are also increasingly moving around in alternative ways, such as cycling, walking, or using public transport, especially in urban areas. For them, this offers more freedom and the opportunity to be constantly online, something that is easier with public transport. Therefore, for most young people, having the latest smartphone is more important than owning a car.
